Dr. Shannon Humphrey spoke with Vancouver Sun reporter Aleesha Harris about the increase in popularity and acceptance of cosmetic treatments. Millennials and younger patients influence a large portion of this uptick. This informed patient population is interested in prevention. For those of you who feel it is alarming for a 20-something to seek treatment, Dr Humphrey shares her perspective on prevention:
“It’s actually a great thing,” she says. “They come in when they see the very earliest signs of aging — not to erase it, but really to just have a strategy and a plan to look their absolute best over time.”
“Very conservative treatments done over time are a) safer and b) have much more natural-looking outcomes,” she says. “They allow me to harness a preventative effect rather than just an immediate-result delivery.”
Beyond this, there is a general feeling that cosmetic treatments are more widely accepted. While frozen and over-filled faces may still exist, there is an understanding that, if you work with the right physician the outcome can be beautiful and very natural. Dr Humphrey shares her experience treating Vancouver patients.
“Every patient who comes in, their first and foremost is, ‘I want to look natural’ and, ‘I don’t want to look dramatically different,’ ” she says. “It’s largely cultural. It bleeds into all aspects of how Vancouverites live. There’s such a focus on holistic wellness and taking care of all aspects of health, which includes skin health and appearance-related health.
