There are a few things you can do ensure fitness is not only good for your body, but also good for your skin. Have you considered a pre and post fitness skincare routine? Don't fret we aren't suggesting you pack a second gym bag for your products. Check out these tips from Dr. Katie Beleznay published in the Westender.
1. You don’t need to bring the contents of your bathroom in your bag.
“If you work out at lunchtime and have already applied skincare in the morning, you don’t need your entire regimen again, since the products will already have absorbed. The exception is sunscreen, which needs to be reapplied after a workout/shower.”
2. Ideally, you should take off your makeup before working out.
“The combination of sweat and makeup can lead to a buildup that can clog the pores. In addition, it is smart to go light on hair products before a workout. Heavy conditioners or styling products can travel down your face or back when you sweat and clog pores.”
3. It might be useful to apply skincare before a workout.
“When you work out it is thought that exercise and the warmth associated can open up the pores so theoretically that would provide more access for a serum to penetrate the skin. Conversely, depending on the product applied, it could clog the pores as well.”
4. Swimmers need to protect their skin from chlorine.
“It can be an irritant and contribute to dryness and rashes, especially in those with sensitive skin. Moisturize before swimming to make sure your skin has a hydrating barrier on it, shower afterwards to rinse off the chlorine and reapply moisturizer to lock in some hydration.”
5. It’s good to shower after any workout, though it won’t necessarily prevent zits.
“If there is a build up of sweat, oil, makeup and hair or skin products then showering can help to minimize any chance of clogged pores. However, acne is not caused by being dirty or not cleansing enough. In fact, I often see patients who over-cleanse or use harsh soaps with the hope it will get rid of their acne. This may just serve to irritate their skin and acne further.”
