Many patients assume that scaring post acne is a reality they have to live with but that’s not the case.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I spend a lot of time talking about the value of preventative approaches — and for good reason. Treating acne early is always your best defense against scarring. Since your propensity to scar largely comes down to genetics, it can be hard to avoid entirely, but getting ahead of it and treating your acne up front can drastically decrease long-term side effects.
There’s no one size fits all. Another basic rule of medicine that you’ll hear a lot around our clinic: everyone’s experience is different. There are a number of different fillers and techniques ranging from more temporary to permanent, as well as combination approaches that can achieve more drastic results. In general, distensible scars — ones that you can soften or flatten by stretching with your fingers — will be more responsive to fillers.
Whether you’re still dealing with acne to this day, or have scarring years later, the last thing you should do is accept it as the status quo. Be sure to speak to your dermatologist — an individual assessment of skin type, acne causes, and/or scar type can help to determine the best course of action for you.
