Did you know that rosacea affects more than 2 million adults in Canada? But despite that significant number, most Canadians are unable to recognize the signs and symptoms of the skin disorder. In a recent survey commissioned by the Acne and Rosacea Society of Canada, 7 in 10 Canadians shown an image of a person with persistent redness in the central face – the #1 sign of rosacea – were not able to identify this chronic skin condition.
Dr. Humphrey, who sits on the medical advisory board for the Canadian Acne and Rosacea Society, understands that this relatively common disorder can have a major effect on a patient’s life. “Since rosacea primarily affects the face, it can have a really significant impact on people’s emotional function,” explains Dr. Humphrey . “They feel embarrassed; they have higher rates of social anxiety and even depression.”
There are safe and effective treatments to get rosacea under control. But to seek treatment a person must first be able to recognize the symptoms. Early recognition and treatment of rosacea is vital as it is a progressive disease.
To help raise awareness, the Acne and Rosacea Society of Canada has posted a series of videos in conjunction with Rosacea Awareness Month to help Canadians understand the skin disorder and how it can be treated.
