Inside Dr. Humphrey’s Spring Tune Up

When spring weather arrives I always find myself thinking of new beginnings — and I’m sure I’m not alone. As the days get longer and warmer, we start to spend more time outside, become more active, and find increased energy as a result. It’s only natural to want our appearance to reflect how good we feel at this time of year.

That’s why I always undergo a spring “tune up”. I think of it as my personal spring cleaning. My tune up is based on a 360 degree plan informed by my unique needs, preferences and anatomy — just like the ones I prescribe for my patients. Here’s a peek into what my tune up looked like this year.

The fundamentals

Just like I tell my patients, it all starts with the skin. There are a few key procedures that I consider my foundation year after year to help my skin look as healthy and vital as possible.

Excel V

Pigmentation isn’t a problem for me, because I’m careful with sun protection, but that doesn’t mean my colouring isn’t impacted throughout the year. With lots of exercise — especially hot yoga — in my schedule, I’m prone to developing redness and blood vessels. Once a year I undergo a vascular laser to correct problem areas.

Microneedling

Microneedling is another treatment that I find really helps to set the tone for the remainder of the year. I think of microneedling as a preventative measure; it produces collagen, minimizes fine lines, reduces pore size and enhances overall radiance, helping ensure you look and feel your best. Because my skin is so fair, I focus on my upper lip skin where I’m especially prone to developing lines.

The finishing touches

With the basics underway, there are a few additional treatments that I choose to round out my spring tune up.

Thermage

I undergo Thermage on my face, neck and eyes each year. I find that it helps to prevent skin laxity, so that the foundation of my skin is firmer for the long term. In my experience, patients who commit to regular Thermage or Ultherapy see a reduction in skin laxity and an increase in tighter, firmer skin where treated (lower face, jawline, brow, eyelid skin and neck regions).

Revitalizing Neuromodulators

I also receive a conservative dose of neuromodulators (Botox) a few times a year. For me, natural looking results are most important, so I work closely with the team to ensure subtle and natural looking result.

Often, the hardest thing about my spring tune up is scheduling. Making time for yourself is the easiest thing to sacrifice when life gets busy, but I always appreciate making the effort to kick off spring on the right foot with a few simple treatments that make me feel great.

Take a look at my post treatment photos below!

  1. Immediately after Microneedling (redness goes down within hours after treatment)
  2. 48 Hours post Microneedling, and immediately post Thermage to face and neck (no make-up)
