From the Cheeks to the Chin

According to the 2017 ASDS survey, nearly 70% of respondents were considering a cosmetic procedure — and the lower face and neck were common areas of concern. In fact, 73% of respondents said they were bothered by excess fat under the chin and neck, while another 67% listed issues in the mid to low face.

Alongside Dr. Jean Carruthers, we dug into why so much of the population is unhappy with this part of their appearance, and what they can do about it.

Is there a beauty standard?

When it comes to the lower face and neck, there are actually certain specific traits that are considered to be most attractive.

Lower Face

The ideal female face is smooth, oval and slightly heart-shaped. For males, on the other hand, it’s square, with a strong jaw. Among both sexes, symmetry is considered a sign of health and reproductive fertility — which we are naturally conditioned to find attractive.

How to get the look:

  • Botox for a crisper jawline and refreshed overall appearance
  • Fillers to tighten the lower face and neck and achieve a smooth contour

Neck

There’s a long list of specific features that result in an attractive neckline, including no jowl overhang, a visible thyroid cartilage bulge and an angle ranging from 105-120 degrees between the neck and the chin. We likely don’t realize it, but these are the specific factors that cause us to find someone beautiful.

How to get the look:

  • Thermage and similar energy-based treatments to tighten the skin around the lower face and neck (without any impact on beards, or the surface of the skin)
  • Belkyra to contour submental fat and jowl overhang
  • + Microneedling & Skinboosters two of the latest additions to our list of treatment options

A Customized Approach

“Combinations are necessary — not just desired, but necessary — to give the best desired result in such a complex region” Dr. Jean Carruthers

Traditionally, the lower face and neck have been considered in isolation — and have been treated in isolation as a result. But that’s not the way we naturally perceive the human face, so it shouldn’t be the way we treat it.

We often talk about how there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for something so nuanced and unique as the human body — and the lower face and neck are no exception. That’s why our physicians recommend a combination of treatments to achieve the best personalized results.

The best part is that all of these treatments can be done in the same day, meaning you can walk out of our clinic and head back to work and your busy December schedule...and enjoy the reveal of your beautiful results as time passes.
