Brotox: The Growing Trend of Men and Aesthetics

Dr. Katie Beleznay provides her observations on the increasing number of men seeking cosmetic treatment.

Every year more and more men are receiving cosmetic treatments. Allergan recently published an infographic offering additional insight on men’s aesthetics.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, neurotoxins such as Botox are the #1 nonsurgical procedure among men. The same survey indicates that in the past five years there has been an 84% increase in the number of Botox procedures for men. The topic has received a good deal of media attention and even led to the coining of the term “brotox.”

At Carruthers & Humphrey we have a deep understanding of treatment options and techniques that cater to male patients. For both men and women, it is important to achieve a natural result that doesn’t appear “over done.” However, unlike women who often request a more noticeable reduction in their wrinkles, men are generally looking for a subtler treatment. At the same time, treating men often requires higher doses to achieve the desired results due to men’s larger facial muscle mass and deeper wrinkles.

The most common areas of treatment for men are crow’s feet and frown lines between the brows (often referred to as the “elevens”). When treating men, it is important to be aware of treatments that may feminize the appearance. You can learn more about the use of neuromodulators in men by watching this video.
